WUI Research for Resilience: Exploring Socio-Environmental Impacts of the Housing Crisis

  • Namaste Lounge at College Nine and John R. Lewis College 1156 High Street Santa Cruz, CA, 95064 United States (map)

Hosted By: John R Lewis College and the Center for Critical Urban and Environmental Studies

UCSC faculty and students will share a project exploring the relationship between the local affordable housing crisis and growth of the Wildlands Urban Interface [WUI] in Santa Cruz County – including the San Lorenzo Valley and South County - where residents face greater risk of fire, floods and landslides. We will share preliminary findings from a resident survey and mapping project on the drivers, demographics, and socio-environmental dynamics of WUI growth, and also use the opportunity to survey UCSC students, staff, and all others in attendance living in the WUI. The project is supported by the UCOP Climate Action Research Initiative, and conducted in partnership with Community Bridges and the Santa Cruz County Office of Response, Recovery, and Resilience.
